Bought ‘All rise’ when it came out. I was 16, my first girlfriend had just turned into history and I liked the band logo. The cover looked a little pathetic, the band shot on the backside a little awkward, and when ‘Home of the brave’ started *boom* I fell in love with Pezzati’s voice, Haggerty’s guitar and most certainly the crazy drums on “Peacemaker”. Back then, my first impression was that the band merged the UK punk sounds I was listening to at that time with what seemed the US approach, more direct, more horizontal (kinda like pogo vs. slam dance). They seemed serious and funny at the same time and very accessible to people that were not so amused by what was later known as NYHC and related headaches. And they had normal, boring haircuts! The first time I realized that it may not be that important to have seriously dyed, spiked, etc hair to rock like hell. After a while (“years”) I read my first interview with the band (in Ink Disease), sent 10 (?) bucks for a shirt that never came (“surface mail” was one of the things thou shalt not miss), of course missed the only Germany tour in 87 – years later, some live tracks popped up (on “The last of the demohicans” CD / Dyslexic) and the stunning cover of G.I.’s “where you live” … man. Phantasizing (1-2 LPs later…) what it’d be like to stage dive to “Treason” or sing “Walk in cold”. Sprayed the R / drill logo onto my grey denim jacket to look even more comical. Those things. They were my first real favorite US punk band and this shit sticks with you until you’re dead.
Newark airport bar. All right, Nu Yoricans don’t like Jersey. No beer sales after 11 pm (or something like that) and the worst line in the history of airport security I have ever been in made me agree. On the left, VIPs were allowed to beat the line, air conditioning was broken, the carpet looked & smelled like shit and still a hundred idiots in front of me. The good morning Bloody Mary had me close to throwing up, but by now I was back to being just thirsty. Sweat, a new shirt with the old flammable solid sign, everything else still from last night. Went to a bar, drank whisky, had some van take us to the not really secret, drug infested party boat rotting away in an old canal. Looked at people doing what they were doing, drinking shitty beer, trying to overcome the feeling that it was just not as perfect as I wanted it to be. Stumbled home with the sun rising.
Finally, the tap, the wood, the glass, the content. Nice takeoff along the Hudson, ciricling over White Plains or Yonkers or god knows where. Back home at seven am, went straight into work, a little late, here’s my birthday present, Friday in, Sunday out, one show. Was it worth it? Pezzati says “You decide”.

In today’s climate of information now and sub-sub-sub-sub-genre within music, it makes total sense that a band like Sannhet, who incorporates so many different elements of music, would exist. I always think of Sannhet as the quintessential post-everything band: elements of post-rock and post-metal mix with hardcore and black metal to create a whole new sound that brings to mind bands like Russian Circles, yet veer into a path of their own. Despite their toes being dipped in so many different waters, Sannhet is far from contrived, creating epic and organic instrumental songs that open up and reveal themselves in about half the time that many long-winded post-rock peers do. Did I mention they rip too?

Context is everything.
Upon hearing in the early hours of the morning that Spiritualized (one of my all time favorite bands) would be playing a last minute show at the incredibly small Secret Project Robot space, located mere blocks from my office, I knew I had to be there. Having already seen Jason Pierce and company blow away the massive club space Terminal 5, send grown men into tears at the legendary Apollo Theater, and recreate the renowned heartbreak of 1997’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space at Radio City Music Hall, I found myself curious as to whether or not SPR would be capable of containing the epic transmissions of the band’s catalogue.
The scope of the band’s live show is legendary, but stripped of the gospel singers and enormous speakers that usually accompany the band, what we were truly exposed to was not some intoxicating religious type of experience… just one of the better garage bands of our time playing powerful songs of mortality, love & addiction.
