THE BABY ATE MY DINGO

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists – NYC Pier 54 July 23 2009

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists fought literally piss poor weather conditions and to play for about 80 minutes at Pier 54 as part of Hudson River Park’s “River Rocks” free summer shows. The song un:art:ig is  proud to present goes by “Where was my Brain?”

As energetic as Leo’s set might have been, I feel bad for Radio4 and how they didn’t get to play, especially since I am/was friendly with 2 members of the band. But considering the circumstances, I think it was the right call to send Ted Leo out there for as long as it seemed safe. The stage was drowned in water because the wind came from the east and blew it right on there, like a fire hose. So one doesn’t need a high school diploma to figure out that water and electricity don’t mix. Let there be no misunderstanding, this show was always on the verge of getting the axe. Everybody should be happy and thankful that at least Ted Leo got to play, even though I’m sure that sentiment might not be shared by all involved that night.

The next free show at Pier 54 is Yeasayer on August 13. Sadly there won’t be any un:art:ig coverage as we are heading to Europe that very day for some good ol’ soccer action.

Excavated from the archive, a clip of Ted’s pre-Pharmacist days. The Sin Eaters live in Germany 1997.
