New York und kein Ende. Ich war vor gut zwei Jahren mal dort und dachte ein Konzert im CBGBs zu sehen wäre das Non plus ultra eines jeden denkbaren Punktourismus. Entzückt war ich angesichts des rohen Zustands des Ladens sowie der Vernachlässigung aller hygienischen Standards und habe an der Bar Mike Gallo mein 5-Dollar Bier über die Hände gekippt. Er fand..s nicht so schlimm, glaube ich. Wenige Monate später war das CBGBs Geschichte. Der Film „The Silence After” aus dem Jahr 2007 dokumentiert die Reihe von Abschiedskonzerten und Benefizshows, für die sich zum Teil legendäre Bands wieder zusammenschlossen und dem Club seine letzte Ölung verpassten. Verantwortlich für »The Silence After« zeigt sich Torsten Meyer, Filmemacher und New Yorker by choice, der seine Aufnahmen unter dem Label Un:art:ig im Internet aber vor allem für öffentliche Filmvorführungen bereitstellt. Ein großes Arsenal absolut sehenswerter Live-Mitschnitte über New Yorks ungeschminkten Untergrund in Sony HDV gilt es bei Un:art:ig zu entdecken. Ich habe Torsten einige Fragen gestellt.

Wie lange lebst Du schon in New York und was machst Du da?
Im November 2001 habe ich meine jetzige Frau im CBGBs kennen gelernt, eine New Yorkerin. Seit dem bin ich regelmäßig in der Stadt und lebe hier seit 2006. Anfangs in der Bronx und seit Juli letzten Jahres in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Für meinen Lebensunterhalt sorgt eine Anstellung im Treasury Department einer Engineering Firma. Die haben mir den Titel ‘financial analyst’ gegeben, aber ‘Eierschaukler’ wäre eigentlich treffender.

Für wie lebendig hältst Du den dortigen Untergrund? Wo geht was?
Das werd ich dir gerade erzählen wo was geht. Dann stehen hier plötzlich Horden von Touris auf der Matte und fallen über meine wohl gepflegte Entertainment-Oase her. Spaß beiseite: Ich finde die Frage ganz amüsant, weil ich in Brooklyn öfter auf relativ junge Menschen treffe, die mich nach dem ‘new happening place’ fragen. Abgesehen davon, dass sich mir schon beim Gedanken an solche ‘in Orte’ alles zusammen zieht, könnte ich es wohl eh nicht beurteilen, weil ich so was weitestgehend meide. Mit Untergrund hat das auch nicht mehr sehr viel zu tun, eher mit Mainstream auf kleiner Flamme. Aber um auf deine Frage zurück zu kommen: Der DIY Untergrund in New York brodelt und kocht. Nahe zu täglich findest du irgendeine Brooklyn house show in Wohnzimmern oder Küchen oder sonst wo. Das sind schon recht paradiesische Zustände. Vor allem, wenn man einen breiter gefächerten Geschmack hat und bei avantgarde, free-jazz oder noise-Gehacke nicht sofort panisch die Flucht ergreift. Loft-Venues die ich sehr gerne frequentiere sind Market Hotel, Silent Barn, Woodser, Dead Herring, Death By Audio, Paris London New York Tokyo, Rubulad – alle in Brooklyn/Queens. Richtig Gas gegeben hat eine zeitlang auch Uncle Paulie’s. Eine Bauarbeiter Imbissbude im nirgendwo von Greenpoint, Brooklyn, die abends zum Punkrock- und Indie-Mekka mutierte. Aber wie bei so vielen Veranstaltungsorten, standen auch hier sehr bald die Kollegen vom Amt auf der Matte und haben dem Treiben aufgrund fehlender Alkohollizenz und wegen Verstößen gegen allerlei anderen Unsinn ein zügiges Ende bereitet.

Neben der Un:art:ig-Seite gibt es ausschließlich kostenlose öffentliche Vorführungen deiner Filme. Die aber überall auf der Welt. Was ist die Idee dahinter, auf DVD-Veröffentlichungen und Eintritt komplett zu verzichten?
Ich könnte dir jetzt was weiß ich erzählen von ‘for the people’ blah blah, aber ganz ehrlich, das hat rein praktische Gründe. Mit Musik sind auch immer Fragen des Copyrights verbunden. Um da von vorne herein jeglichem Stress vorzubeugen, sind alle meine Geschichten kostenlos und werden nicht als klassisches Produkt vermarktet.

Wir machen im Moment auch eine kleine Interviewreihe über die alternative Kulturszene in NYC. Inwieweit bist Du in diese Szene eingebunden? Kennst Du viele der aktiven Menschen in den Projekten in denen Du filmst, z.B. dem No Rio oder früher im CBGBs, oder bist Du mit deiner Kamera eher Chronist von außen?
Wenn du immer und immer wieder mit einer Kamera irgendwo auftauchst, dann bleibt Kommunikation und sozialer Kontakt ja nicht aus. Dass ich hier allerdings mit irgendwem so richtig dicke wäre, lässt sich nicht unbedingt behaupten. Mann kennt sich halt, grüsst höflich, schnackt hier und da über relativ belangloses Zeug, aber das war’s dann auch. Meine generell sparsame Kontaktbereitschaft paart sich in diesem Fall recht formidabel mit einer nicht zu leugnenden Oberflächlichkeit in der amerikanischen Kultur. Wenn du mich also als Chronisten bezeichnest, dann würde ich dem nicht widersprechen. Auch wenn man das im Endeffekt gar nicht so klar abgrenzen kann. Ein Chronist betrachtet ausschließlich und hält fest. Das ist bei mir nicht der Fall. Wenn ich es mir leisten kann, dann bin ich auch Unterstützer. Egal ob es sich dabei um das Abc No Rio handelt oder um die Hauskatze des Goodbye Blue Monday (großartiger Veranstaltungsort und Café in Bushwick, Brooklyn), die dringend eine Operation benötigt.

Wie muss für Dich perfektes Live-Footage aussehen?
Das ist natürlich von der Art der Musik abhängig. Generell schadet es aber nie ein bisschen Bewegung ins Spiel zu bringen. Damit meine ich keineswegs hundert Schnitte in 20 Sekunden, sondern den Versuch einen Moment mit nur einer Kamera genau so einzufangen, wie man ihn als einzelner Konzertbesucher emotional wahrnimmt. Das ist im Endeffekt immer eine Mischung aus guter Kameraposition, Kamerablickwinkel und Kameraarbeit. Also das Gegenteil von einfach nur stumpf die Linse drauf halten.
